Welcome to Pack 268's Pinewood Derby Page!!

This is Pack 268's Pinewood Derby Page where hopefully we will be able to answer any questions you may have about designing, building your car and the race itself.  Please read the rules and regulations on building your cars before you make your first cut.  These are designed to make it fair for everyone racing.  We want everyone to have a good time and to be creative with your car designs.

There will be 2 different races.  The first will be the scouts racing against each other.  The second race will be an opportunity for siblings, parents or anyone else to race.  If you are interested in getting a car kit and have not done so, let me know and I will see that you get one.  Who knows, I have asked Santa to race this year and you may find yourself competing against Jolly old St. Nick himself!!  Hope to see you there!!

Pinewood Derby Car Kit Rules

Before designing your car, there are a few important things you need to know, the rules!!  Below this paragraph is the 2016 Conestoga River District Pinewood Derby Race Rules.  Since the winners of our Pack race will be invited to participate in their 2016 Pinewood Derby District race, we should all follow the same rules.  Here are a few key things to remember.
  • Use The "ORIGINAL PINEWOOD DERBY CARE KIT":  You must use the original parts of the "Official Pinewood Derby" car kit you have been given.  If you go to AC Moore or Michaels, they sell Pinewood Derby accessories.  You can use the weights and decorative items but you cannot use their pre-cut bodies, axles or wheels.  The wheels axle and body contained in the "official kit" must be used.
  • There are some very important rules about the design of your car's body:  Please read the rules attached at the bottom of this paragraph.  The key things to remember are that the nose of your car must rest flush on the starting pin of the race track.  When cutting into the sides of your car, the area around the axle must remain  untouched.  If you narrow your car in these areas, it may not work on the track.
  • WEIGHTS:  Your Pinewood Derby car can weigh no more than 5 oz. in order to be qualified for racing.  With this said, the car, axles and wheels out of the kit can weigh anywhere from 2 to 4 ounces depending on the block of wood.  As a general rule, a car will run faster if you add more weight.  You can do this by adding accessories such as drivers or side pipes, etc..  We encourage you to bring your car as close to 5 ounces as possible without going over.  Weights can be bought at Michaels or AC Moores but do not wait until the last minute to do so.  Jan. and Feb. are big months for scout pinewood derbys and stock at the craft stores may be limited.  The Scout Store at 630 Janet Avenue will also sell accessories and weights for the cars.  If you choose to add weights to your car and plan on placing them on the bottom of your car, please make sure they are recessed into the body of the car.  If you do not, they may rub against the track and prevent the car from rolling properly.
  • LUBRICATION:  If you wish to lubricate the axles of your car, you may only use dry powdered graphite.  This can be purchased at any of the craft stores and I will have some available the day of the race.  Make sure to lubricate your axles before registering your car because it will not be permitted after the race begins.

Pack 268 Pinewood Derby Workshop

Lancaster Bible College (Physical Plant Building)
901 Eden Road
Lancaster Pa 17601

Saturday March 5th 2016
1:00 - 3:00pm

This activity is for those that have been given a pinewood derby car kit and need assistance with
shaping, cutting or assembling your kit.  Power tools will be used and adult supervision for each scout attending is mandatory!  Please do not drop off a scout and then leave!  Michael Garland has been nice enough to allow us to use the facilities at The Lancaster Bible College for this so let's pay attention to any rules of safety that will be given.  If you cannot follow instructions, you could be asked to leave.  Remember that these are tools and can very easily injure someone that is not using them properly!

The Pinewood Derby workshop will be held between 1:00 and 3:00pm at the Lancaster Bible College in the Physical Plant Building.  Once you enter the college, you will turn right and continue through two stop signs and the building is just past the tennis courts.  Remember to come to the activity with a shape in mind that meets the Pinewood Derby rules contained in your kit.
